Catching a Wave at Levitt Pavilion with the Ladies

Old Friends and New Memories

It was one of those perfect summer evenings when the air was just perfect—warm with a gentle breeze reminiscent of a simpler time–a more innocent time. Mikelle, Liz, and I decided in May to get these tickets at Denver’s Levitt Pavilion for a beach-like concert featuring the legendary sounds of the Beach Boys. The setting was ideal: a sprawling green lawn filled with fellow music lovers and the sun setting in a blaze of oranges and pinks over the foothills. It felt like the perfect backdrop for a night of nostalgia and fun.

Catching the Wave of High Expectations and Good Vibrations

We arrived with high expectations, excited to relive the magic of the Beach Boys’ hits. The promise of iconic tunes like “Surfin’ USA” and “Good Vibrations” excited us all. With her wealth of stories and experiences, I reminisced about my younger days when the Beach Boys were at the peak of their fame. Liz, always up for a fun time, shared tales of family road trips soundtracked by the band’s sunny harmonies. And Mikelle, caught up in their enthusiasm, couldn’t wait to see how the evening would unfold.

The crowd’s energy was infectious as we settled in with our picnic blankets and snacks. People of all ages had gathered, from tiny tots swaying to the beat to older fans who had followed the band since their heyday. It was a multigenerational celebration of music that never really goes out of style.

However, when the band took the stage, we quickly realized that our high expectations needed a slight adjustment. Only one member of the original group was there.  Mike Love, including his son, stood among men a third of his age.

There was a moment of collective realization among the audience—this wasn’t exactly the Beach Boys we’d imagined. But then, something magical happened. The mood shifted from mild disappointment to joyful reminiscence as the familiar tunes played, accompanied by videos and photos of the original band members on the big screen.

Mikelle was the first to break into a nod in approval. Mikelle’s infectious spirit caught on as she waved her arms. Liz and I quickly followed, surrendering to the music and the memories it evoked. It didn’t matter that only one original member was present; the songs were still the same, and the joy they brought was timeless.

Music Transcends Time

The concert became more than just a performance—it celebrated how music can transcend time and age. We sang along to every song, cheered for the memories on the screen, and laughed at how the harmonies could still bring a smile even after all these years. Katherine’s stories took on a new vibrancy as the music played on, and Liz’s carefree laughter was a perfect soundtrack to the evening.

As the night drew to a close and the final notes of “Kokomo” faded into the ocean breeze, we realized that the real magic of the evening wasn’t just in the performance. It was in the company, the memories, and the reminder that even when things aren’t exactly as we expect, they can still be exactly what we need. We packed up our things and headed home, already reminiscing about the night we caught a wave of joy at Levitt Pavilion, proving that the good vibrations are still out there, just waiting for us to join in.
