Adventures in Grand Lake, CO

Everyone Needs a Little Time Away.  Mikelle’s Vacation.

Heck, it has been a long haul with Covid.  We were getting cabin fever and decided to hightail it out of the city and into the mountains to a real cabin in the high country.

Gone is the traffic, the hustle and heat of summer in the city–at least for a few days. Mikelle loves getting out during the summers, she loves going for long drives and enjoying the scenery as we drive through mountains. One of her favorite places to visit is the little mountain town of Grand Lake for the July 4th weekend.  This year, we rented a cabin for a few days with family.  Mikelle’s ninety-three-year-old grandmother, her Aunt Patty, Cousin Maggie, and her children made the event a true family affair.

Grand Lake is a wonderfully wheelchair-accessible town.  wander past shops, and restaurants, and finally head on down to the lake itself. On this trip, Mikelle enjoyed a tour of the lake with our friends Laurie, Tom, and Emily who have a cabin and a pontoon boat on nearby Shadow Mountain Lake. The waves are gentle in the morning and the sun is high. The gentle rocking of the boat soothes the soul as Mikelle relaxes for two full hours taking in life on the lake.

Evenings felt like summer camp.  Burgers and brats on the grill, marshmallows and smores for dessert around the gas fire with her family surrounding her.  We all need a vacation and this is Mikelle’s. Katherine is peaceful and happy, and Taylor is usually sunburnt and laughing.

When finally we reach home, Mikelle is worn out but pleased with her mountain adventure. We have learned the importance of breaking away from the day-to-day mundane to refresh our spirits and our minds. This is especially important for Mikelle who depends on us to help her travel beyond the limits of her neighborhood. Estes Park

Unfortunately, we were exposed to Covid as half the family got it and half did not.  We were the lucky half.
